Exchange Traded Funds

Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a collection of securities—such as stocks—that tracks an underlying index, such as the FTSE 100 Index or S&P 500 Index. ETFs can contain many types of investments, including stocks, commodities, bonds, or a mixture of investment types. An ETF is traded on an exchange just like stocks. The price of an ETF’s shares will change throughout the trading day as the shares are bought and sold on the market. You will be able to invest in most ETFs that are listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Unit Trusts & OEICs

Unit Trusts & OEICs

Unit trusts and Open-Ended Investment Companies (OEICs) are professionally managed collective investment funds, sometimes known as Mutual Funds. A fund manager pools money from many investors and buys shares, bonds, property or cash assets and other investments. You own a share of the overall unit trust or OEIC – if the value of the underlying assets in the fund rises or falls, the value of your units or shares will also rise or fall. Unlike an ETF, these funds are not traded on an exchange and are just traded once a day.
Investment Trusts

Investment Trusts

An investment trust is a company that raises money by selling shares to investors and then pools that money to buy and sell a wide range of shares and assets. Unlike unit trusts, they can borrow money to buy shares, which is known as gearing, and the price of shares in an investment trust can be lower or higher than the value of the assets attributable to each share – this is known as trading at a discount or at a premium.
